The Perfect First Birthday with bakerdays*

Time seems to be moving so bloomin' quickly at the minute. Where on earth has this year gone? I feel like it was February only last week! But something that really highlighted the passing of time to me was the fact that we celebrated my youngest goddaughter's first birthday last weekend. I can remember the day she was born so vividly. I had wanted to be at the hospital, but unfortunately, I was working and couldn't be there to welcome her into the world. Luckily though, she waited until I was on my break, and I remember sitting on the floor of the cloakroom, resting my tired feet, and when the text came through to say that she'd arrived, I jumped up and started telling everyone that was outside the door. It's hard to believe that that was a whole year ago! But fast forward to now, she is the most loving and gentle little girl I think I've ever met, so I wanted her first birthday to be super special, and what better way to do that than with a little cake, just for her!

When bakerdays asked me if I'd like to try out one of their letterbox cakes*, I knew that it would be perfect opportunity to tie in with Thea's birthday. While it's all well good having me try out some cake, she is a pretty harsh critic when it comes to food and will make a bit of a scene if she doesn't like something. So I sent them over a photo of her to be printed on a cake and waited patiently for it to arrive. I will say, though, it took a fair amount of time to choose the type of cake I wanted because bakerdays have over 100 different designs to choose from for every occasion you could think of. But I went for a cake with rainbow sprinkles printed along the sides because who doesn't love sprinkles?!
It arrived a couple of days before her birthday, so following their instructions, I left the cake in a cool spot to prevent the icing from sweating and distorting the image. But when I opened the little tin, I was so pleased to see that Thea's little cake form face was there looking back at me!

As the name would suggest, letterbox cakes are 5 inches in diameter, so they can be posted easily through a letterbox. While this is a popular choice at £14.99 per cake, bakerdays also sell other sizes - small party cake (7 inches | £27.99), medium cake (9 inches | £37.99) and large cakes (12 inches | £57.99) - so there are sizes to suit every need. But for a toddler, this cake was perfect!

Not only do you get a choice of size, but there's also several options of cake flavour and dietary-specific cakes. I consulted with my auntie, Thea's mum, before making any decisions, but in the end, we went for a chocolate cake. What person can resist a chocolate cake? We also didn't want Thea's sister to feel left out and chocolate cake is her favourite, so we kept her in mind when putting the order together too.
So, here she is before she completely destroyed the cake! Before we'd taken these photos, Thea had just woken up from a nap and was a little bit whingey, but as soon as we put the cake in front of her, she was so excited. At first, I think she was amazed that she could see herself on the cake, and then when she realised it was something edible, her hands were straight in. I'm not sure if she's ever had fondant icing before, but she absolutely loved it and was quite taken with peeling it off, as you can see in the photo on the right! She also loved the cake crumb itself and was quite happy just to grab fistfuls of it to pop into her mouth. Of course, we managed to salvage some for my sister and I to try too.

We were so surprised to find that the cake was still deliciously moist, even though it had been sitting in a cold space for a couple of days. That's something that's pretty difficult with chocolate cake, so our hats go off to bakerdays! My sister is an avid fan of fondant icing, or 'birthday cake icing' as she likes to call it, and she instantly fell in love with the covering on this cake. It was the perfect thickness and it wasn't overly sweet. I was also pleasantly surprised by the layer of chocolate buttercream that stuck the fondant to the cake. I wasn't sure if the company was going to use a syrup of some kind, but nope! Proper buttercream! It was absolutely scrumptious and finished the cake off just beautifully.
The cake was loved by everyone and it was absolutely ideal for the occasion. Like I said, there are cakes for all your needs, from graduation cakes to new home cakes, from baby shower cakes to Hanukkah cakes. I swear, any occasion that you can think of, bakerdays will have a cake to cover it. You don't have to worry about being at home because letterbox cakes can be posted (of course, if you purchase a bigger one, you may need to answer the door), which makes them perfect for surprising someone. Imagine turning up at home and there's a little cake waiting for you by the door! And because they're so well packaged in the tin with the surrounding air bags and box, you don't have to worry about it getting damaged in the post. It's pretty much a foolproof idea!

Thank you so much to bakerdays for sending a letterbox cake* to me. You made a little girl very happy!
