January 2020 Gratitude List - Pitching & Paper Cutting

2 Feb 2020

Finally, we've made it past the 99th of January and we're smooth sailing into February. I'm always hit by how long January goes on for and I end up getting a little bit miserable about it, and I'm sure I'm not alone in that. But we've done it - we've smashed the first month of 2020! I've been so looking forward to getting back into writing my gratitude lists, so let's get on with the first one of the year.

Obviously, I launched straight into January with a fresh mind about the things that I was hoping to achieve for the year, so I was definitely going into the month with clarity and a lot of hope. That isn't to say that the month was plain sailing, but it was definitely a good'un, so here are the five things that I was grateful for.

  1. Having incredible stats - I try not to get hung up on my blog stats too much because I really only write on here for the love of it. If ten people read my blog, then that would be fine, but in January, I had close to 10,000 views and I hit 200,000 all time views. I was so beyond chuffed and I'm really proud of myself for creating content that I am happy with and would read. It was such a milestone month for The Northernist, so I'm definitely going to keep aiming high across the rest of the year.
  2. Finding the courage to have my first smear test - this has been a bit of a saga that I've documented on my blog and it's been therapeutic for me to do so, but yes, I finally bit the bullet and went for my first smear test. And to be honest, it wasn't as bad as I expected it to be! It's been a little over two weeks since I went along for the appointment and I'm still waiting for my results, so I'm a bit anxious, but I'm hopeful!
  3. Putting myself out there - I mentioned in my 2020 goals post that I would like to do more pitching, which is something that I was trying in January. I've been a bit more ballsy when I've received press releases and asked whether I can go along to things or review places. I've put myself forward for things on Twitter, I pitched to a magazine and my most favourite local brand. Granted, one of the things I pitched for was rejected, but everything else has come up peaches and cream! Make sure you look out for a couple of collab posts across February.
  4. Eating vegan - I didn't stay strict to Veganuary because I knew that I would struggle to commit 100%, but throughout January, I've made a bit more of an effort to try more plant-based meals. It's been really eye-opening to how many options are available and how supermarkets are becoming a lot more accommodating, so this is something else that I will be keeping up throughout 2020. Asda have launched their own plant-based range, which I've tried a little from, but there are so many other bits that I want to try!
  5. Re-discovering my love for crafting - me and crafting, we go through ebbs and flows. One minute, I'll be obsessed with cross stitching, then I won't touch a piece of Aida for months. In January, I re-discovered how much I love paper cutting, which was definitely fuelled by the templates and paper that I received at Christmas. I've been working on a fairly difficult piece for a little while now and I've been loving it. I'm so excited to finish it so that I can move on to my next project!

So that was a little glimpse at my January. While it wasn't mega exciting or adventurous, it was a really lovely start to the year and I'm excited for more of the same in February. As I mentioned, make sure you keep your eyes peeled for some neat collabs!

What were you grateful for in January?
