By the fantastic Hello Saturday. Read their blog or find them on Facebook and Instagram.

We are here to talk to you today about the little lesser known holiday that is Galentine’s day (or Palentine’s day for our male friends, to make sure absolutely nobody misses out!). Let’s face it, Valentine’s day is usually only relevant if you’re in a relationship and even then there’s a big chance that your other half will have completely forgotten to get you so much as a card, whilst you on the other hand will have gone out of your way to think of something thoughtful for the occasion.

Galentine’s Day takes place on the 13th February each year, the day before Valentine’s Day, so what better excuse to celebrate the love and admiration you have for your closest friends, your soulmates, your ride or die mates and the ones who are always there for you no matter what?

The notion of Galentine’s Day originally derived from Amy Poehler’s character Leslie in the comedy Parks and Recreation, when in 2010 she invented the holiday to celebrate her friends and we’ve got to say that we’re totally here for it!

Although things are still not back to normal and we’ll be in lockdown for most of February, including Galentine’s Day, there are still ways that you can celebrate your amazing friendships.

We tasked ourselves with looking into what’s going on locally to see how you can celebrate on the day itself or how you can make plans for after lockdown, so that you have something extra special to look forward to!

Galentine's cards in Teesside

Cards are a fantastic way of showing that you care, they allow you to put into words how much someone means to you and why. They can be sentimental, pretty, cheeky, funny, even a bit sweary!  Basically there’s a card out there for every type of friendship. Whether they’re given alone or alongside a gift, they can mean a lot to the receiver and can be a lovely keepsake for them to look back on.

Liz at Rich Little Things has designed a stunning range of cards which are available to purchase online. With quotes such as ‘friends before bell ends’ and ‘mates before bad dates’, these cards are absolutely perfect for Galentine’s Day! They come in a foiled typography design, some cards can even be personalised and you also have the choice of sending the card directly to the recipient for additional convenience. You can find out more about Rich Little Things right here.

Something sweet

If your bestie has a sweet tooth, then we’d definitely recommend checking out Sadie May Cakes. They have unveiled an absolutely exquisite Valentine’s range which fits in perfectly with the Galentine’s ethos. The collection is about grace, elegance, inner beauty, self-love, trust, loyalty and being soulmates for life.

You can opt for the Luxury Gift Box of Delicate Cookies, the Luxury White Chocolate with Rose and Raspberry or the My Valentine-Soulmates for Life Swan Cookie set. Once you set eyes on them, you may be forgiven for thinking twice about gifting them and instead keeping them all for yourself!

If you fancy treating your friend (or yourself) to a gift that keeps on giving over a slightly longer period of time, Sadie May Cakes also offers a monthly subscription to their Cookie Club! Choose from a 3 month, 6 month, 12 month or a rolling subscription which will ensure that your friend will receive a box of beautifully handcrafted cookies through their letterbox each month, all with different and exclusive themes and designs.

You can find out more about Sadie May Cakes’ Valentine’s collection right here and more about the Cookie Club right here!

Jewellery and accessories

For something thoughtful that your friend can wear and keep, why not opt for a piece of jewellery? Jayne at Pretty Little Doll designs and makes some beautiful string and silver stretch bracelets with different stones and charms. There are different note cards with positive and motivational quotes to go with your order and even gift boxes with extras such as cookies, hot chocolate, sweets and keyrings for your bestie! Their hair accessories are a saviour during lockdown and beyond and you can even personalise a small canvas pouch with your friends initials on, to keep their jewellery and trinkets safe. You can find out more about Rock Paper Kisses right here.

Galentine's date nights in Teesside

If you’re lucky enough to have your closest gal or pal in your support bubble, then a Galentine’s date night at home could be the perfect way to celebrate! If you’re not in a bubble though, don’t let that hinder your plans. You can always split any food ordered and arrange a doorstep delivery to your friend. Then once home, you can get on your PJs, open the wine, log on to Zoom and you can catch up virtually whilst devouring whatever edibles you have treated yourselves to!

Some other ideas for treating your soulmates are some fantastic Blondies from the Blondie Baker! You can now purchase vouchers too, so that your friend can book in for a date most suitable for them and with the new Easter flavours and Crème Egg Blondie Bombs, I’m sure they’ll be a popular gift.

Another local business well worth checking out if you’ve not already done so is Knots & Crosses Bakery! Specialising in delicious gourmet pretzels, there are some fantastic flavours and combinations on offer, perfect for a sweet or savoury tooth! Available on the 13th and 14th of February are giant heart shaped pretzels in a choice of four flavours with accompanying dips. We ordered the Nutella pretzel and the pepperoni pizza pretzel ourselves recently and that was a really good day!

A spa day at Seaham Hall and Spa

We know the past year has been stressful for the majority of people during this pandemic and when considering where might be the perfect place to recuperate and recharge from these difficult times, we can think of only one place. Seaham Hall and Spa is a firm favourite with us Hello Saturday girls, we simply cannot get enough of the tranquil and supremely relaxing ambience that only this venue can provide.

Unfortunately due to lockdown, the spa itself is currently closed, but that should not stop you from planning a date in your diary with your favourite girls to spend the day being completely pampered.

Even though the facilities are closed right now, there are still gift vouchers available to purchase online, so why not go ahead and treat yourselves? Knowing you have those vouchers purchased will make it feel a little more real and make you all the more excited to spend the day with your best pals in the most serene surroundings when this lockdown is over.

Breakfast at Muse, Yarm

Fancy a post-lockdown morning meet up for your Galentine’s Day? Well, for us, Muse’s breakfasts are second to none. They are presented in a way that makes you want to dig in immediately, and every mouthful is utterly splendid.

Source: Muse

The space inside Muse is bright and airy, situated on Yarm High Street, and our favourite way to spend a Saturday morning is to call in to Muse bright and early, fill up on a delicious breakfast (we can highly recommend their Maple Syrup French Toast) and then afterwards, we walk along the High Street, popping into the various boutiques along the way and finally, stopping by the local florist for a little something to brighten up our living rooms. Perhaps you can top your morning off with exchanging some blooms with your besties - who says you need a man to give you flowers?!

Dinner at Lost Property, Yarm

Lost Property are the folks whose social media you’ve likely already spotted on your Insta feed and then taken a minute, at least, to scroll through and drool over every mouth watering image they upload, and we think that reason alone is good enough to make this venue your Galentine’s dinner date of choice, post lockdown.

The menu varies from their signature sharing boards, to burgers, to a good selection of vegetarian dishes. We have sampled more than a few of these options in the past and have never been anything but impressed.

Lost Property has the perfect girly date night atmosphere - the great food and cosy candlelit ambience makes for an evening to remember. We love it there and have been daydreaming about our return for quite some time now, so maybe we’ll see you there!

So there we go! Thank you for reading, we hope that we have given you some ideas, whether you’re celebrating  Galentine’s, Palentine’s or Valentine’s and we hope that this showcases just how lucky we are to be surrounded by so many amazing Teesside businesses!

Remember to check out the lovely pair behind Hello Saturday on FacebookInstagram or their blog for book reviews, beautiful thought pieces and lots more Teesside fabulousness!
