As we all know, Teesside is a haven for small businesses covering a variety of products and items, but did you know it's also a hotspot for boozy businesses? From distilleries to cocktail enthusiasts, and from small batch breweries to cans and bottles designed just for us Teesside folk. And so today, I'm going to be sharing a new brewery with you all - craft beer fans, you'll want to read this one!

For this instalment of The Independent Tees Collective, we're talking all about Salt Steel Brewing Co. This Boro-based brewery was started by Liam Senior, an honorary smoggy and parmo convert, and is keen to represent the industrialism, community and strong structures that we have in Teesside through his craft beers. If that sounds up your street, have a read of this post to learn more about this biz and the brains behind it.

Hello! Let's start with a bit of an introduction. Who are you and what is your business all about?

Hey! I'm Liam Senior and I'm the Managing Director of Salt Steel Brewing Co. We are a brand new craft brewery from Teesside.

Where did the inspiration for Salt Steel Brewing Co. come from?

I have a real passion for craft beer and I've worked in business for over a decade. I really wanted to make my work and passion go hand in hand, so I had one of those "Why don't I just go for it?!" moments.

Tell us about your first release, Strip Tees!

Strip Tees is a West Coast IPA. It's a full flavour, bitter blast of citrus, grapefruit and pine, with floral hop aromas. It's a great intro into craft beers if you haven't jumped in yet, and also something for fans of craft beer to enjoy too!

The name Strip Tees came about as I wanted something that highlighted where we're from and something a little tongue-in-cheek that people will enjoy. We're proud to be from Teesside and I wanted to create something for Teessiders to celebrate and get behind!

What do you enjoy most about running Salt Steel Brewing Co.?

I've really enjoyed seeing people's reactions. Everyone has been so interested and supportive. It's been great fun to see a project like this come to life and share it with the world too! We also have a YouTube channel where we've been sharing our story along the way, which has been fab too.

What has been Salt Steel's biggest achievement so far?

We sold over 650 cans of Strip Tees on pre-order in the first couple of weeks, which was absolutely brilliant. I can't wait for everyone to try it and to hear their thoughts!

What do you love about the Teesside independent scene?

I have really admired how supportive the Teesside community is. Businesses want to support each other, and to see everyone succeed and do well. It's also amazing to see so many Teesside businesses coming together to collaborate on projects. Teesside's a really special part of the world filled with awesome people!

What's next for Salt Steel Brewing Co.?

We're currently in the process of launching our first beer and building relationships in the community, sharing our IPA with pubs, bars and restaurants. Next, we want to build our core range of beers so that we have something for everyone and to have our products available all over Teesside. In the future, it would be great to have ourselves well-established in the area and beyond, and even have our own bar in the town.

And finally, recommend one other Teesside independent to us!

LemonTop Gin! They just launched at the end of 2020 and the gin tastes like a real lemon top ice cream. It's so good!

Whether you're a local looking for some Boro-based beer or a craft beer fan from further afield, make sure you take a look Salt Steel Brewery's website, Facebook or Instagram to order and see what they get up to! The future is looking so bright and bubbly (and ever so frothy) for this business, so I'm definitely excited to see what they've got up their sleeves.

Make sure you check back next week for another incredible Tees independent!
