We've had so many birthdays in the family lately, and as I said in one of my most recent indie Tees collective posts, there is no gift quite like a customised one. So today, I'm sharing another brilliant local biz that offers pretty personalisation on a huge range of items, but they especially cater to matching clothes for children and adults. If this sounds like something you'd love, check out the rest of this post!

Today, I'm chatting all about Misfits & Me, a Boro-based business that offers custom clothes, accessories, and vinyl items, like bottles. Basically, if you wanted to kit out your whole home with their adorable products, you totally could! With a huge range of items available, you'll be able to find the perfect gift for a birthday, wedding, baby shower, anniversary, and so many more occasions. Let's learn a little bit more about them, shall we?

Hello! Let's start with a bit of an introduction. Who are you and what is your business all about?

Hi! I’m Ashleigh and I run Misfits & Me, which is all about bespoke clothing and accessories for both children and adults.

Where did the inspiration for Misfits & Me come from? What made you want to kickstart it?

I set up Misfits & Me in 2018 (originally The Little Glitter Room) as I saw gap in the market for affordable items for brides, children and adults in our local area. I was at home with my then 2 year old, Aria, and had a passion for creating personalised items for her and gifts for my family.

Fast forward to 2019 and I’d had my twins, so the direction of the business changed completely, which led us to completely rebrand to Misfits & Me. Having three children, they are little misfits, which created the new name! They are my inspiration to achieve so much more and to push the business, as being a mama is very difficult, but also being a disabled mama on top makes everything so much harder. I want to make them proud to show them that anything is possible!

What is your favourite thing to customise? And which colour of your glitter is your favourite?

Oh, that’s tough! My favourite item has to be the matching bleached mama and Mama’s Girl/Boy t-shirts, as they are completely unisex and who doesn’t like to match their little ones! And I would have to say rose gold is definitely my favourite glitter as it gives such a nice effect to any item.

What do you enjoy most about running Misfits & Me?

I actually enjoy being able to work around my daughters because I can pick and choose when I can work. I also enjoy speaking to customers and helping them create the items that they love!

What has been Misfits & Me's biggest achievement so far?

One of my biggest achievements to date is actually being extremely busy in 2020, so much so that I didn’t have enough room in my house for stock. I had to take up space in my mam’s shop to help hold stock, and work from both there and home.

What do you love about the Teesside independent scene?

I love that there are so many amazing companies locally and there is lots of support from one another, whether it's sharing and interacting with social media or actually purchasing from each other!

What's next for Misfits & Me? What do you hope for the future?

I’ve just set up a website to make it easier for customers to purchase, and from that, I'm hoping to offer exclusive clothing that no other company is providing. I also hope that I can continue to work around my girls and achieve my sales goals!

And finally, recommend one other Teesside independent to us!

My favourite local business is The Little Vinyl House. Debbie, the owner, provides vinyl for crafters and small businesses alike. She is an amazing woman and without her, I don’t know where my business would be!

Personally, I absolutely love it when people twin with their children, so I think the idea of matching tops and jumpers with a personalised print is so cute! Misfits & Me already have a devoted following, so make sure you join the crowd. You can see more from them on Facebook and Instagram, and make a few purchases from their shop.

Make sure you check back next week for another incredible Teesside independent!
