Fudge It - The Independent Tees Collective

1 May 2021

If I've said it before, I've said it a thousand times, the Teesside indies in the sweet department are absolutely sensational. They cover such a massive range of treats, like brownies, cupcakes, cheesecake, and so much more, but today, we're chatting about fudge. And not just any fudge, but THE fudge that I'm always banging on about and imploring absolutely everyone to try.

Yes, today is all about Fudge It, a Boro-based biz that I've been itching to have on my Indie Tees Collective series. I first fell in love with their fudge right at the start of the pandemic after stumbling across their Insta. Since then, it has been an absolute joy to watch them grow, and go from strength to strength. I feel like they announce something exciting every other day on their Instagram and it's amazing to see them smash all of their targets. Plus, their fudge is absolutely banging - think creamy, melt in the mouth good. If that's whet your appetite, check out the rest of this post to learn more!

Hello! Let's start with a bit of an introduction. Who are you and what is your business all about?

My name is Laura, and I'm a 28 year old army wife and a mum of two young boys. I first made fudge for family and friends around Christmas 2019 - little did I know how popular my fudge would become and that it would turn into the business that it is today! During my crazy first year, Fudge It has grown rapidly, enabling me to now rent my very own fudge factory where I hand make all orders. I have also accepted the amazing opportunity to supply a well known department store in Newcastle.

My amazing customers and support from family and friends is what drives my business and leads me to be extremely excited about what the future holds for myself and Fudge It!

Where did the inspiration for Fudge It come from? What made you want to kickstart it?

Truthfully, I was terrified to start Fudge It. Fudge It was born on 2nd January when a customer from my first ever Christmas market wanted to order again. My New Year's resolution just days earlier was to say yes instead of no to all the things that scare me.

What is your favourite flavour of fudge that you've created and why?

Salted caramel - this was the first flavour I made and is now the most popular flavour I make. Every time I taste test salted caramel, it brings back memories of where it all started.

What do you enjoy most about running Fudge It?

I love the flexibility it gives my family, the freedom it gives me as a person, and the hope for an exciting future. I love speaking with customers, old and new, hearing their thoughts, ideas, and how they stumbled upon this little business.

What has been Fudge It's biggest achievement so far?

My biggest achievement came one day whilst I was cooking dinner. I received an email inviting me to stock my fudge in Fenwicks Newcastle. This was initially meant to be for 6 days, however, my fudge proved so popular that it was ongoing until lockdown unfortunately closed the store. We hope to see you there very soon!

What do you love about the Teesside independent scene?

The support between small businesses is amazing. Everyone helps each other in many ways, like sharing on social media, giving recommendations, and offering advice. We are our own little community.

What's next for Fudge It? What do you hope for the future?

We have got exciting things in the pipeline, however, they are currently top secret. In the future, Fudge It will hopefully expand to a larger premises and be able to offer job opportunities to the community.

And finally, recommend one other Teesside independent to us!

Bridget at The Little Gin Palace. She is a star! Bridget and I collaborate our products, and will also support each other at events, such as Ingleby Barwick community market.

I honestly can't wait to see what Laura gets up to with Fudge It next. Like I say, the business is just going from strength to strength, and she's also just announced that she's going full time with it, which is incredible. If you haven't tried the treats from Fudge It yet, you absolutely must. Give the minis a go (cookie dough is my favourite) or one of the trays for a slab of naughty goodness. If you want to keep up with all of their goings on, check Fudge It out on Facebook or Instagram, or order through their website.

Make sure you check back next week for another incredible Teesside independent!
