If there's one thing that I could eat forever and be completely happy in doing so, it's really great cake. If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times - my sweet tooth is a ravenous one! Luckily for me (and the rest of us), we have some incredible bakers and cake decorators in Teesside, and I'm featuring one of my favourites in today's Independent Tees Collective post.

I was first introduced to Tallulah's Bakery in 2020 after I had a very strange encounter with a baker on Instagram. To cut a long story short, I got a very rude response after I asked for a birthday cake quote, but Vicky of Tallulah's Bakery came along and reassured me that there are trustworthy bakers out there. And since then, I've been following her and loving every single thing she puts out there. She is so unbelievably talented, humble, and fabulous, and she absolutely makes me want to be better at all things cake making. If you want to learn more about her, have a read through this post!

Hello! Let's start with a bit of an introduction. Who are you and what is your business all about?

Well, hello! My name is Vicky and my business is Tallulah’s Bakery.

Tallulah’s Bakery is all about celebrating you through cake! I am absolutely passionate about embracing the things you love and what makes you who you are, then turning that into a cake! Whether it’s on a birthday cake, a wedding cake, or in a treat box, I will forever advocate for being unashamedly enthusiastic about what makes you happy! And for eating some delicious cake while you do it!

Where did the inspiration for Tallulah's Bakery come from? What made you want to kickstart it?

Inspiration absolutely came from my mum! When we were growing up she took cake decorating classes, and made all our family and friends’ cakes for fun. She stopped for a little while when we started going through exams, but eventually picked it up again. And once I came home from university, I started to get involved. I found that I really enjoyed it and seemed to do ok at it!

It really took me by surprise - although I’d always been creative, my background is in history and I’d always wanted to work in museums. So when I got a job at English Heritage, I was made up, until the job suddenly became seasonal and I needed something to get me through the winter. It just made sense to fill my time with cake, so Tallulah’s Bakery (inspired by the classic Bugsy Malone!) came into the world in 2013, for quite boring, practical reasons!

But the more cake I made, the more I loved it and eventually, in the very best way, it took over my life!

What has been your favourite cake creation or treat box to date?

Oh gosh, my favourite changes all the time! I’m so lucky to have such great customers who always want fun cakes or treats, so I get to have a new favourite every week! Recent faves include a sculpted Yzma (from the Emperor’s New Groove), a pair of Dr Martens cake topper, and my baby shower treat box.

But I have two cakes that are particularly special to me; one was a 2-tiered Finding Nemo creation and the other a family member’s 4 tiered wedding cake. In the early days of Tallulah’s Bakery, I really suffered with perfectionism and a lot of negativity about my work (and let’s be honest, it does creep back in more often than I’d like!). But these two cakes made me realise what I could be capable of if I just trusted myself and for that reason they mean the world to me.

Flavour-wise, just give me my Biscoff sponge warm from the oven!

What do you enjoy most about running Tallulah's Bakery?

Definitely not the washing up! It is absolutely the relationship I have with my clients. There’s so much trust between us that it blows my mind. I love how they can come to me feeling excited about their ideas and know they’re going to get an equally excited response!

Then of course, delivering the finish product and putting a smile on someone’s face is an overwhelming and amazing feeling!

What has been Tallulah's Bakery's biggest achievement so far?

I recently told my husband that my greatest achievements were finally knowing how to make macarons and getting the chance to create a fondant figure for a cake of one of my cake idols. He argued that perhaps surviving a global pandemic was a bigger achievement, but then he doesn’t know the satisfaction of creating a wonderfully smooth and well risen macaron, or having a fondant figure you sent through the post arrive in one piece!

But I guess he does have a point! Tallulah’s Bakery has now been in the world for 8 years and it’s grown each year. I know that’s something to be so proud of! And having come out the other side of 2020 still standing, still smiling and having really grown the relationships I have with my clients is nothing to be sniffed at!

I ‘quit’ so many times during the early years but the fact that it didn’t even cross my mind to give up last year is a real personal success.

What do you love about the Teesside independent scene?

The people behind the businesses! There are so many fabulous independents doing wonderful things and this last year we have all rallied together, so it’s been wonderful to be a part of the community. Thanks to social media, I’ve been able to grow friendships and get support from fellow business owners, and that has been invaluable.

What's next for Tallulah's Bakery? What do you hope for the future?

My absolute hope is that I can keep growing the business. The feeling of being able to work doing something that makes me happy and where I can be creative is an amazing one, so I just want to keep going!

Within the business, I introduced postal orders last year (including my monthly themed treat boxes), so I would love to keep developing those so I can spread a little joy to more people! I have lots of fun plans for my themed boxes – a classic movie box and a dinosaur box are up there on the list.

And I’m really excited about continuing to develop my skills in decorating and would love to create some mega cakes! I’d also love to share what I’ve learned with others through tutorials and (fingers crossed!) in-person decorating parties.

And finally, recommend one other Teesside independent to us!

It has to be my fellow cake decorator, Annabel at Florence Bakery. She’s a beautiful human who is always there when I need a bit of support and she makes the most beautiful cakes – I am always amazed by what modern masterpieces she creates! She’s also a fab cook and often shares what she’s cooking up on her Instagram stories, accompanied by her wicked sense of humour!
