I've always said that if I was only allowed to eat one food for the rest of my life, it would be pizza (but only if I could switch up the toppings, obvs). It's one of those things that absolutely everyone loves, thanks to its versatility and endless options. And one business that truly believes in pizza power and bringing their passion to Boro is Slice.

Now I've been following Slice on Instagram right from the very beginning, before they had their shipping container outside Hit The Bar, and it's been a true joy to watch them grow over the last few months. Plus, I've also been totally drooling over their incredible pizzas, so I thought it was about time I found out more about the duo behind the biz. They don't give too much away on their socials, but I've got the inside scoop, so keep reading to find out more about Slice and their future plans.

Hello! Let's start with a bit of an introduction. Who are you and what is your business all about?

Hello! We're Brad and Sophie, and we run Slice. We’re both currently working full time, but due to the early success, Sophie will be working at Slice full time from the end of July! Slice is all about bringing something to Middlesbrough that the majority of people here have never tried before, the Detroit style pizza. A lot of people have a perception about 'deep pan' pizzas and that it's not their cup of tea, but with Detroit style having a light and airy focaccia base, it's completely different to the standard deep pan, so we're keen to change people's minds on it!

Where did the inspiration for Slice come from? What made you want to kickstart it?

I (Brad) set up Slice after making pizzas in our home pizza oven for the past 2-3 years. I'd started off by making Neapolitan style pizzas and slowly transitioned into perfecting the Detroit style after seeing a couple of people in a Facebook group making them! When an opportunity came up to set up shop in a shipping container outside of Hit The Bar, I couldn't turn it down, and thought the combination of Detroit pizza slices and pints sounded great.

Which of your pizzas has been the crowd favourite so far?

The Detroit for sure. It's our 48 hour fermented focaccia base topped with Italian pepperoni sausage, a cheese blend, our slow roasted house red sauce, drizzled with homemade hot honey!

How has the reception for Slice been at Hit The Bar?

It's been amazing - everyone has really got behind us and came down to try the food, and the feedback has been great too!

What do you enjoy most about running Slice?

Just doing something completely different to what we're used to and getting to work together!

What do you love about the Teesside independent scene?

We absolutely love the independent scene on Teesside and at the moment, it really feels like it's booming. It's great to see so many talented people take that leap into making it a fully operational business.

What has been Slice's biggest achievement ?

Just getting through that first week of 500 bookings when we didn't have a clue what we were doing was probably our biggest achievement so far!

What's next for Slice? What do you hope for the future?

So the plan is to branch out and try to get Slice operating from a couple of different bars in Middlesbrough, which we're currently in the process of doing at the moment. We'd really like to get a food truck of some sort and attend markets, festivals, weddings etc. The huge end goal would be to have our own restaurant!

And finally, recommend one other Teesside independent to us!

There are so many to mention, it's hard to choose just one! Northern Portions, Burger Ding, Bedford Street Coffee Shop are our current faves.

Is anyone else really hungry for pizza now? A Detroit style slice covered in cheese and pepperoni sounds so good right now... someone stop me before I chew my arm off! As I mentioned, it's been so lovely to watch Slice grow online and watch them rack up the customer numbers. They're a true hit! If you want to keep up with Slice, make sure you check them out on Instagram or Facebook

Make sure you check back next week for another incredible Teesside independent!
