One thing that I was really excited about when the lockdown restrictions started to lift was the return of arts events, and let me tell you, there's a whole host of exciting things coming up! But right now, it's time to look forward to Sonic Arts Week, which is running from the 16th to the 23rd of July. This week-long celebration of sound, music and art will take place in Middlesbrough, and is brought to us by the creative minds behind Middlesbrough Art Weekender and The Auxiliary. But there's one event I'm particularly interested in telling you all about.

The Sonic Bridge Cruise

The unique Sonic Bridge Cruise offers ticket holders a sunset journey along the majestic River Tees, completely free of charge, which you can book here. Australian artist, Jodi Rose, has created a piece of music using the vibrations of the different bridges along the River Tees. The result is a unique place-based experience of the sounds of the river and its bridges, with personal stories and reflections from the local community.

Originally from Sydney, Australia, Jodi Rose has travelled the world for 14 years, exploring the sounds of bridges through her ongoing work ‘Singing Bridges’, which ‘highlights the unheard sounds and secret language of the urban environment, opens a space for reflection, poetic reverie and contemplation, and takes us beyond the physical architecture and functional aspects of the structure, into another realm entirely.’

Jodi said, "It was truly an honour to have the community in Middlesbrough and Stockton-on-Tees share their bridge stories and memories with me. I am very happy to invite you to join the Sonic Bridge Cruise to Infinity and experience their voices along with the bridge soundscape on this trip along the River Tees.

The industry and engineering of the region "built the world", and the giant blue dragonfly across the Tees stands as a symbol of pride not only in the dynamic industrial past, but speaks also to the future. I'm thrilled to be part of this vibrant cultural landscape as part of the Sonic Arts Week. Thanks to The Auxiliary, MIMA, Rivershack, and all the people who told me their bridge stories."

Guests will board the cruise boat at the Castlegate Quay in Stockton-on-Tees, embarking on a journey along the River Tees, listening to the sound pieces through wireless headphones. There will be an optional shuttle bus service available for participants travelling from Middlesbrough to Stockton.

As this event will take place in British summertime, please bring weather-appropriate clothing! Places are free, but limited. To book a place, visit Under-16s must be accompanied by an adult.
