New Music I've Been Loving In June

Source
I keep telling myself that I need to talk more about music on The Northernist, but I don't want to be one of those people that forces their tastes on to others. That being said, there has been so much good new music from bands and artists that I love that I just had to write a post all about them. It's felt like their have been new songs and albums being released all over the place, and while I've found it difficult to keep up and have the time to listen to absolutely everything, I've bloomin' loved it!

Arcade Fire - Everything Now // Creature Comfort - admittedly, this was the material I was most excited about. Arcade Fire are one of my all-time favourite bands, but their most recent album, Reflektor, just really didn't do it for me. Don't get me wrong, I am all about their first three albums, but Reflektor just wasn't my cup of tea. That being said, when I heard that they were bringing out a new song on the 1st of June, I was just ecstatic! When the 1st rolled around, I wasn't disappointed in the slightest with their offering, Everything Now - in fact, I was quite the opposite. I was so in love with the disco beat and the ABBA-style strings. Plus, how could I not fall for that pan flute?! This is a song that I can see myself listening to on repeat throughout the summer, especially in the car with the windows rolled down. Their next song, Creature Comfort, arrived just over 2 weeks later and yet again, I was in love. This one is still quite disco-y with angsty lyrics and a Talking Heads sound. It's quite bizarre in comparison to Everything Now, but still brilliant. I am ridiculously excited to hear the full new album at the end of July!

Alt-J - Relaxer - speaking of bizarre things, Alt-J released a brand new album on the 2nd. Something I love about Alt-J is that they're constantly changing their sound and experimenting, so you never really know what to expect and this album was no exception to that. While it's only 8 songs long, it's still got that signature trippy, alternative sound to it, but there's a heck of a lot of sampling, strings, guest vocals, electronic sounds and a punchy, I-want-kick-stuff-over-song called Hit Me Like That Snare. As with all Alt-J albums, it's a real feast for the ears. As per, Joe's voice, the lead vocalist, is on point and the lyrics are so poignant - that's something else I love about Alt-J, the fact that their lyrics are so loaded that there's so many ways that they can be interpreted. This album is definitely a firm favourite with me and the band just continue to flourish with every piece of new material.

George Ezra - Don't Matter Now - in contrast to Arcade Fire and Alt-J, both of which aren't really played on mainstream radio, we've got George Ezra. I'm quite a big fan of George's and Wanted On Voyage was an album that I had on repeat for months after it was released. He had sort of dropped off the radar a little bit, but I'm subscribed to his mailing list and when he announced that he was releasing a new song, I was beaming from ear to ear. His music is just so happy and catchy, and Don't Matter Now fits in perfectly! Despite being about anxiety and trying to put your worries aside, it's the perfect summer song. It's got a catchy chorus and a whole host of brass in the background... what more could you want? I'm really looking forward to seeing what else George is cooking up!

HAIM - Right Now // Little Of Your Love // Want You Back - I'll admit, I was a bit late to the Right Now party. The audio was released on May 11th, but I don't see too much of HAIM on social media, so I had absolutely no idea! I've been pining for a new album from these gorgeous sisters for what feels like a lifetime, so when I found out about the song, I was buzzing with excitement. It's such a beautiful song and features those signature vocals that we all know and love. Not only have they got Right Now out from their upcoming new album, Something To Tell You, there are two others! Little Of Your Love is definitely my favourite of the two as it's so chirpy and full of stunning harmonies and layers, which reminds me a lot of The Wire from their first album. The second song that they released only a couple of days ago is Want You Back, yet another cheerful tune with an accompanying video that's filled with dancing in the middle of a street. That's exactly what I feel like doing when I listen to their songs too!

New growers
The Killers - The Man - I had really high hopes when I heard that The Killers were bringing out new stuff (I say 'heard', I kind of figured it out from all of their social media posts), but I was a bit underwhelmed when I actually heard their new song, The Man. I'l admit, it's super duper catchy and I love pretty much everything that the band put out, but this style is so different from anything they've done before. It's very 80s and Bee Gees-esque, so it's got that disco beat to it, but I just don't know. I can't quite put my finger on why I can't get on board with it. It's one of those songs that I need to listen to a few times before it sticks, and I hope it does because I'm seeing The Killers in a couple of weeks!

Fall Out Boy - Champion - I am a die-hard Fall Out Boy fan and I'm not even ashamed to say it, but their new music really isn't hitting the mark for me. I have no doubt in my mind that I'll buy their new album when it's released, but I didn't really enjoy the first song they released from it, Young & Menace, and their latest offering isn't that great either. I really do love Fall Out Boy though, so I'm determined to like their new sound!

There have been so many other new releases this month from artists like Paramore and Foo Fighters, but these are the bits that I really wanted to talk about.
What new music have you been loving this month? Have there been any new releases that you think will grow on you?

  1. I really love this! I'm a casual listener to people like HAIM and Alt-J, but I'll definitely give these tracks a listen. When I saw those new songs by The Killers and Fall Out Boy though, I was SUPER stoked. I think you had an excellent month in music :)
