If you’re having a staycation in Teesside or the surrounding area, you’ll need somewhere to stay. And sure, there are plenty of big name hotels across the region, but how about trying something a little different? Maybe you fancy trying out some off-grid glamping or something really indulgent? You’ve come to the right place!
In this list, I’ve picked out eight unique and unusual places to stay in and around Teesside. Take a look and see where you fancy booking for your next trip or staycation.
1. Kip and Nook, Darlington
Kip and Nook in Manfield (just outside of Darlington) prides itself on hosting the ultimate quirky getaway in the Yorkshire countryside. They have a host of places to stay, including a super relaxed barn for up to 8 people, a cosy loft for up to 4 people, and a renovated shipping container for 2 with its own hot tub. It’s a truly stunning place and gets booked up quickly, so make sure you get your reservation in!
2. Alpaca Alpaca, Yarm
For glamping with a difference, try the Llama Hut at Alpaca Alpaca. With this place, you’ll be staying in a shepherd’s hut on a working alpaca farm, surrounded by the gorgeous, gentle animals! The hut is perfect for two people and complete with an outdoor fire pit and seating, so you can watch the alpacas as you eat your breakfast. You’ll also get a discount on their alpaca walking experience, so it’s a fabulous find.
3. Baby Moon, Guisborough
For more traditional glamping, look no further than Baby Moon in Guisborough. This site is home to a selection of fantastic yurts, bell tents and cabins, so there’s something to suit all kinds of glamper. And as Baby Moon is in Guisborough, it gives you the perfect chance to climb Roseberry Topping or explore the North Yorkshire moors. You can also book on to one of their workshops to really make the most of your stay!
4. The Impeccable Pig, Sedgefield
If you’re looking for something really decadent and a step up in the hotel world, try The Impeccable Pig in Sedgefield. This place is home to 12 themed rooms, some with 7-foot wide beds, freestanding copper baths and hot tubs. They’re all incredibly plush and luxurious, and with the attached restaurant, you won’t need to go far for your dinner. It’s the perfect spot for a weekend away.
5. Walworth Castle, Darlington
Did you know that there’s a castle in Teesside? Now you do! Walworth Castle is out in the Darlington countryside and is a fabulous option for somewhere to stay if you want to feel like royalty. This 12th century building was a stop for King James I on the way to his coronation, and you can stay in the room he used! You can also enjoy a gorgeous afternoon tea, roast dinner or a murder mystery night to really get the most out of your stay.
6. Whorlton Pods, Faceby
Enjoy stunning countryside views and dark night skies at Whorlton Pods out by Faceby and Swainby. These pods are ideal for keen walkers and mountain bikers, or those who simply want to get away from the hustle and bustle. The site is super quiet and relaxed, and is right on the North Yorkshire Moors’ doorstep so you can get all the fresh air you need. And I can’t skip over the fact that they have hot tubs too!
7. The Nest, Hurworth Burn Reservoir
The Nest at Hurworth Burn Reservoir (in County Durham) is a stunning place to unwind and be enveloped in nature. There are several types of accommodation to choose from, including a house that sleeps up to 12 people, luxury one bedroom lodges, and elevated treehouses, so there’s something for everyone. It’s a truly peaceful place, especially at the waterside lodge with its view of the reservoir, so it’s one to keep in mind for your next trip.
8. Treehouses at Ramside Hall Hotel, Durham
Ramside Hall Hotel is a little outside of Teesside in Durham, but it’s just over half an hour away from Middlesbrough, so ideal for a staycation. While you can stay in the hotel itself, the Treehouses are a bit more of a unique choice. These luxury treehouses feature wraparound balconies, sunken hot tubs, freestanding baths and large bedroom suites. They’d be perfect for a romantic night away. You could also tie in a trip to the spa!
