Trying All Natural Haircare - First Impressions Of Neogen Shampoo & Conditioner*

19 Apr 2019

One thing I definitely don't talk about enough on my blog is my hair. I'll share so many aspects of my life and waffle on about makeup until the cows come home, but my hair? It doesn't get a look in, so I believe that today is a total first for The Northernist! As we'll chat about in a minute, my main hair woe is how thin it has become over the years, so when the pharmaceutical company, Fagron, got in touch and asked if I wanted to try out their new thickening shampoo and conditioner* brand, Neogen, I couldn't say yes quickly enough!

My relationship with my hair

The reason that I don't talk about my hair on my blog is because I kind of don't like it. In fact, I'm not sure there's ever been a time that I've loved my hair.

I was picked on in school because it was frizzy and thick, so much so that I felt like I couldn't do anything with it. When I got to university, a lot of it fell out due to stress, leaving me with fairly thin hair that I still feel like I can't do anything with. I've always been envious of my sister who can do expert braids and amazing curls with little to no effort, whereas I rarely do anything other than a ponytail or a bun. It still falls out now from stress, but the only thing that will fix that is some organisation in my life!

Because of that, I guess you could say that I don't have a great relationship with my hair. There have been times where I've told myself I'm going to shave it all off and start again - it's that extreme! I wish that it was thicker, which is the main reason why I'm so excited to try this shampoo and conditioner duo*. I also wish it wasn't naturally wavy, but we'll tackle the thickness first!

The products I currently use

This is the point where all the haircare fans out there start shaking their heads and screaming at their screens. The products I use probably don't help me with my hair woes, but that's kind of because I'm a bit lazy when it comes to learning about what will help it out. I'm all about makeup and that's what all my effort goes into in terms of beauty, so hair just kind of gets left by the wayside. I tend to go for something that smells nice over something that will benefit my hair.

The shampoo and conditioner I currently use is the Sun-kissed Raspberry range from Alberto Balsam. I know - super cheap, super cheerful - but it smells so good! Plus, it was the shampoo and conditioner that my grandma used to wash my hair with, so it's a really nostalgic scent for me. I find that it makes my hair feel soft and smell great without being overpowering.

If my hair is feeling dry, I might add a tiny bit of Soap & Glory's Multi-Talented Wonderbalm to the ends. This is a solid oil that can be applied to skin, hair, nails, pretty much anywhere to add a bit of moisture, so it's great if I've over-dried my hair. I might also use the Tresemme Keratin Hair Mask in the shower if I've remembered to stock up, which thickens my hair slightly, but also makes it silky smooth.

What is Neogen?

"Neogen hair products boost hair growth and take care of hair by increasing its thickness and gloss, restoring the hydrolipidic film, regulating sebum and calming itchiness.

Not only are these shampoo and conditioners* scientifically designed to help your hair grow and feel thicker, but they're also completely natural and cruelty-free, so you can be sure that you're not putting anything terrible into your hair, like parabens, alcohol, dyes or petrolatum. They're packed full of essential oils, like:
  • Rosemary - to strengthen the hair and reduce the amount of fall out
  • Juniper - to activate the hair folicles
  • Tea tree - to revitalise and strengthen the hair
  • Lavender - to slow down hair loss

What are my first impressions?

The look

As you can see from my photos, the shampoo and conditioner* bottles have a sleek, high end appearance to them. The boxes that they arrived in were soft matte too, so they definitely feel luxurious and have nothing gimicky about them. The white squeezy tubes with flip lids would look great in any bathroom.

The smell

I have to admit, I found the smell a little overpowering at first. As soon as the parcel arrived, the initial thing I wanted to do was sniff the products and I was surprised. I haven't used that many all natural hair products in my life, but I found the smell to be quite medicinal, which is probably down to the tea tree oil. However, it wasn't unpleasant at all and I found that when I was washing my hair, the scent diluted down and became rather lovely!

It's also worth pointing out that the scent lingered in my hair after washing and drying. It wasn't strong or distracting in any way - it just made my hair smell like it was freshly washed.

The feel

I found the shampoo* to be slightly runnier than my regular shampoo, which wasn't a problem. It didn't lather up as many traditional shampoos do, but I've read that this is quite common for natural shampoos. This usually quite handy for knowing that you've got a good coverage of product, however, I simply followed the instructions and massaged the shampoo into my scalp for 2 minutes before washing out, and had zero problems!

The conditioner* was thicker than the conditioner I'm used to, but once massaged through the ends of my hair, it was a total dream to work with. I could spread it through evenly and a little went such a long way, so I'll have to remember not to use so much in future washes! I left this to activate in my hair whilst I continued with the rest of my shower routine, before rinsing at the end.

The way it made my hair feel

After one wash, I really wasn't expecting much, however, I was totally blown away. I let my hair dry naturally for about an hour before blow drying, and my hair felt incredible. Thickening shampoos have a reputation for drying your hair out, but my hair felt so silky soft. It also felt the tiniest bit thicker after only one wash, so I was massively impressed. My hair usually feels so thin after drying, so it was amazing for it to have a bit of body back.

Usually, I try to wash my hair every other day so that I don't kill it even more, and by the end of day one, I can feel it starting to get oily. This is something that didn't happen with the Neogen shampoo and conditioner*, and I even found that I didn't have to use dry shampoo for my second day hair. When it says it controls sebum, it really does! I could've even got a third day out of it had I been brave enough!

Will I continue to use?

I will most definitely be continuing to use this shampoo and conditioner duo*. In fact, I'm going to give you all an update after a month, so I can re-visit my first impressions and see if my opinion has changed/how my hair feels after many more washes.

But for now, I'm so impressed with these products and I'm very much looking forward to seeing some more results!

If you are like me and have fallen a little bit out of love with your hair, the Neogen shampoo and conditioners* could be for you. I know it sounds ridiculous that there was a noticeable difference after one wash, but seriously, you need to try it out for yourself. I'm so grateful to have been introduced to the brand - I'm so ready for them to help me enjoy my hair!
