Which Teesside Restaurants, Pubs & Cafes Are Taking Part In The 'Eat Out To Help Out' Scheme?

17 Jul 2020

The Ship at Redmarshall

Just when we thought that the lockdown restrictions couldn't get any better, Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced on July 8th 2020 that a brand new scheme will be put in place for August - the Eat Out to Help Out initiative. This has been designed to encourage people to get back out there and support restaurants, pubs and cafes whilst saving a bit of money. To put it simply, if you spend £20 or less per head on a meal, the government will pay for half (if you spend over £20 each, the government will only take off £10 per head). Sounds too good to be true, right?

You guys know that I'm all about shouting for the independents and local businesses, so I think that the Eat Out to Help Out scheme is going to be brilliant for Teesside. To help you guys plan out your date nights, family dinners or 'just because' meal out, I thought that I'd put together a guide with all the places that are taking part in the initiative in our area. But first, let me tell you a bit more about Eat Out to Help Out.

This scheme is a brand new, never-seen-before thing for the UK and will run from August 3rd to August 31st. It can only be used on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, but you can use it as many times as you like throughout the month, so go wild! But not too wild because this discount doesn't cover alcoholic drinks.

I found the maths behind it a little bit confusing, but to put it in the most simple terms possible, the government will pay for half of your meal and the discount is capped at £10 per head, which means you should aim to spend £20 or less per person to get the full discount. If you exceed £20 or more each, you will only be able to have £10 each removed from the bill. So if a couple spent £80, meaning £40 each, only £10 will be reduced per person, so the bill would work out at £60.

Now on to the list! I've included a little bio for each place, plus their address and links, but if you'd like to see a more condensed list, please click here. If you're a business owner and would like to be added, send me a DM or an email. Or if you're a business owner and would like to register your restaurant, pub of cafe, click here.

Baker Street Kitchen
One of my favourite spots for an all-day brekkie or a sandwich with a side of sweet potato fries! This is a fabulous eaterie in the centre of Boro, so great if you've been out to the shops or if you want somewhere that has plenty of parking in neighbouring streets.

You'll be able to enjoy all of the classics, like parmos, burgers and roasts, all while being close to Darlington and a short drive from Stockton - it's the perfect spot to eat, slap bang in the middle.

Aviation Way, Teesside International Airport, Darlington, DL2 1PD. Visit their website or Facebook page for more info.

The Peppermill Bistro

We're so lucky to have an incredible selection of places across Teesside taking part in this scheme, and I hope that this guide has helped you to plan out where you might like to eat in August. Remember, this discount can only be used from Monday to Wednesday, and you will only receive up to £10 off the meal. You also can't use it on alcoholic drinks, so stick to the lemonade, guys!

This is the perfect time and opportunity to support some of our independents, so make sure you pay a visit to at least one of these places and help them to recover from the extended closure period during lockdown.
