But there are crafters out there who try something and truly find their calling, both enjoying the craft and being incredibly good at it. I’m going to be chatting about all things crochet and wire wordy with Nomechompski Crochet, the Stockton-based maker who specialises in baby clothes, toys, and home decor. I remember coming across Nomechompski when I was researching for my Teesside fashion and accessories Christmas gift guide, and instantly loving her creativity and cute creations. Seriously, if you melt at the sight of babies in little crochet hats, you’re going to love her! Hello! Let’s start with a bit of an introduction. Who are you and what is your business all about?
Hi! I’m Naomi, and I’m all about crochet and knitted wire words. I’ve recently taken a leap into bare wire words too!
Where did the inspiration for Nomechompski Crochet come from? What made you want to kickstart it?
My Nana taught me to crochet when I was in primary school. She constantly had some sort of cardigan on the go, and I was fascinated by the way she’d just whip up these things up for absolutely anyone who was having a baby. I’d always rummage through her patterns after school and get her to show me how to make them. I fell out with it a little as I got older, because naturally as a teenager, I was too cool for that! Then when I was pregnant with my daughter in 2012, I decided to crochet her a blanket and I just never stopped.
What has been your favourite project to date?
My favourite project so far has probably got to be the summer top I recently made, because this was the first thing I’ve ever made for just me. I enjoyed every single stitch of it and I’m set on making another in white!
What do you enjoy most about running Nomechompski Crochet?
Knowing that one of my blankets is keeping a little baby warm, or that my wire words are hanging in someone’s kitchen makes me so happy. I get a real kick out of people being happy from the things they receive from me. I suffer with my mental health and anxiety, as so many other people do, so my work really gives me something to focus on and be happy about – especially when I receive pictures of my stuff in its new home! I also really enjoy the creative side of what I do, and working with customers to give them their own ideas in yarn or wire form. The design side of things is literally endless and I love that.
What has been Nomechompski Crochet’s biggest achievement so far?
This has got to be reaching 800 sales on Etsy. When I started selling on there, I had no idea how much it would take off and I felt immensely proud of myself for what I’d achieved on it. I’d constantly worry people would buy things and be really unhappy with what I’d made, so getting to 800 sales made me realise I was doing something right, and bossing it at the same time!
What do you love about the Teesside independent scene?
I love how diverse our independent scene is and how it’s grown massively over the last few years. I feel like the Teesside independent scene has its own unique language, style and passion. We’ve really got some pure gems up here and I’m always keen to shout about it. The North East is always overlooked and I love how our independents are getting out there and getting themselves known.
What’s next for Nomechompski Crochet? What do you hope for the future?
I just want to continue being creative! I want to be able to develop my style more and experiment with more materials. I want Nomechompski Crochet to continue to grow and be a name people talk about. I also dream of being able to supply another local business with my stuff one day too!
