Adventure Cinema – Raby Castle – Fri 18th to Sun 20th July
We’re starting at Raby Castle because Adventure Cinema are bringing the ultimate movie experience to the grounds with epic screenings across Friday 18th to Sunday 20th. First up is the Grease Sing-A-Long, where you can relive the iconic ’50s vibes and sing your heart out to hits like “Summer Nights.” Next, the Queen Sing-A-Long will have you rocking out to the legendary anthems of Freddie Mercury and the band. For families, there’s Moana 2, the beloved Disney film with catchy tunes and adventure. And if you love musicals, don’t miss Wicked Sing-A-Long, where you can belt out the Broadway hits from the magical world of Oz. Sunderland Art Festival – Roker – Sat 19th July
This year, Sunderland Art Festival is ‘Putting Sunderland in the Frame’ with an exciting mix of exhibitions, creative workshops, live performances, artist stalls, and hands-on activities, all designed to celebrate the city’s creative spirit. There are three festivals happening across three dates in three different locations, and the first is in Roker on Saturday 19th. This is a free event and the programme is absolutely full to the brim with fabulously creative activities that people of all ages can enjoy, sea glass art workshops, wildlife spotting, canvases on the beach, model boat sailing and so much more. It’s going to be a brilliant day out and there’s no ticket needed, so just head to Roker from 11am to join in or take a look at the Sunderland BID website to see the full programme.
Summer Nerd Fest – Gateshead International Stadium – Sat 19th July
Calling all fans of comics, cosplay, and all things nerdy, Summer Nerd Fest 2025 is just around the corner! On Saturday 19th, this event promises to be a paradise for geek culture. Held at Gateshead International Stadium, expect to find an array of activities including cosplay competitions, interactive gaming, dinosaur fun, and merchandise stalls. It’s a perfect start to the weekend for pop culture enthusiasts to connect, share their passions, and maybe even meet a few celebrities. Whether you’re a casual fan or a die-hard collector, this is one festival you won’t want to miss, so get your tickets on Eventbrite.
Summer of Play – National Trust sites – Sat 19th July to Sat 30th Aug
The National Trust are always brilliant when it comes to school holidays and for this summer, they’re doing Summer of Play across multiple North East sites. For example, Souter Lighthouse have got mini sports and outdoor games to try, like tennis, archery and races. Seaton Delaval Hall have got a recycled junk orchestra to play with and props to make your own performance on the Baroque-inspired stage. Ormesby Hall are hosting circus workshops where you can learn to juggle and hula hoop. There’s honestly something for absolutely everyone and all of the activities are included with normal admission or are free for members. The fun starts from Saturday 19th July through to Saturday 30th August and you can check out the National Trust website to see all of the sites and the dates of their individual activities.
Summer Holidays at Ushaw House – Sat 19th July to Mon 1st Sept
This summer, Ushaw House is offering a range of fun, family-friendly activities perfect for all ages. Set in the beautiful grounds and the house itself, you can enjoy outdoor adventures, arts and crafts, nature trails, and loads more. The programme a ladybird spotting trail, a toy takeover, mosaic workshops, inflatable golf, honestly the list just goes on and on. The fun starts from Saturday 19th with activities on every single day until Monday 1st September, but you’ll need to take a look at the Ushaw House website to see which event is on which date. Some require booking a separate ticket, but many are included with a day pass or annual membership, so have a look and start planning your trip.
Kynren – Bishop Auckland – Sat 19th July to Sat 13th Sept
Step back in time and immerse yourself in Kynren, an epic live-action show that tells the story of England’s history like you’ve never seen before. Taking place in a 7.5 acre open-air arena in Bishop Auckland, Kynren showcases over 1000 actors, animals and special effects in a dazzling spectacle. You’ll journey through time from the Roman invasion to the 1960s, experiencing dramatic battles, royal events, and moments of national significance. This family-friendly event is a thrilling mix of history, drama, and visual wonder, and it truly is one of the best things I’ve seen. The opening night is Saturday 19th and it’s on every Saturday throughout the school holidays, so get your tickets on the Kynren website.
The Book of Mormon – Newcastle Theatre Royal – Tues 22nd July to Sat 9th Aug
Get ready to laugh till your sides hurt! The Book of Mormon, the hit musical from the creators of South Park and Avenue Q, is making its way to Newcastle’s Theatre Royal from Tuesday 22nd July to Saturday 9th August. This irreverent, high-energy show follows two young Mormon missionaries as they embark on a wild journey to Uganda, where nothing goes as planned. BBC Proms: Round Midnight with Soweto Kinch – Sunderland Fire Station – Thurs 24th July

This is actually the first time the BBC Proms has been in Sunderland and on Thursday 24th, this special event brings together the talents of award-winning saxophonist Soweto Kinch for a unique jazz experience.
