Durham is an absolute hot spot for foodies. There’s just so much choice and that’s made even more delicious by Durham Restaurant Week. This fabulous event is back from Friday 26th January to Friday 2nd February 2024, bringing a touch more deliciousness to the start of the year. And for the 2024 edition, you’ll be able to enjoy a range of deals at over 35 eateries across the city.
But with so many places taking part, how will you choose? If you need a bit of help with narrowing your options down, I’m here to throw in my two cents. Take a look below to see my top 5 picks for Durham Restaurant Week 2024.
1. Faru – 7 course tasting menu for £60
Restaurant Week is the perfect excuse to try somewhere new and for me, somewhere I’d love to try is Faru. I’m not usually one to go for dainty dishes and tasting menus, but I’ve heard so much hype for Faru that I just can’t ignore it! Plus, it’s just been named as a Michelin favourite after only 8 months of business, so it’s a real must-visit. For Durham Restaurant Week, they’re offering a 7 course tasting menu for £60 per person and it looks utterly amazing.

2. Rio Brazilian Steakhouse – 30% off food
We were kindly invited along to Rio as part of Durham Restaurant Week’s campaign on Instagram and I was completely blown away. I love a rodizio-style restaurant – it’s just such a fun experience and feels really personal – and Rio was no exception. The staff were super attentive with every table, every meat we had was incredible, and the salad bar was one of the best I’ve ever seen. If you’re a meat lover and haven’t been to Rio before, you can enjoy 30% off food from Monday 29th January to Thursday 1st February.

3. Tapas Factory – 3 tapas dishes and a drink for £15
Tapas is always a fantastic option for Restaurant Week, especially if you’re going out as a group. Tapas Factory is the ideal choice if you’re heading out to eat with friends because you can get 3 tapas dishes and a drink for £15. So if you go out as a group of 4, that’s 12 dishes to share between you! Plus, this is an authentic Spanish tapas restaurant, so you can expect only the best. There’ll be plenty to choose from, but if there’s patatas bravas or croquetas, then I’m sold.

4. Coarse – 3 course lunch, snack and drink for £25
Ok, I know I said I’m not usually one to go for dainty dishes and tasting menus, but Coarse is another spot that I’m really intrigued by. They aim to make tasting menus more affordable and accessible, but still keep that top quality and precision. The menus that I’ve seen from them since they opened have been really exciting, and the Durham Restaurant Week lunch menu is no different. The sticky toffee and malt whisky sounds particularly good! Enjoy a 3 course lunch, snack and a drink with them for £25.

5. Fat Hippo – starter and a main for £15
I love Fat Hippo, so there was no way I wasn’t going to include them in my top picks. If you’re a fan of a mucky burger, this place will be right up your street. Their burgers are basically the stuff of legends and they’re pretty much taking over the North East. For Durham Restaurant Week 2024, you can enjoy a starter and a main for £15. I highly recommend trying the Trash Browns or Dirty Waffles to start, and the Wild Bill for your main. You won’t be disappointed, I promise!
