Trying Finkle & Green’s Sunday Dinner – Stockton-On-Tees (AD)

A good Sunday roast truly is the highlight of the week. And while there’s nothing that beats my mum’s roasts (she really does do the best Yorkshires and roasties), it’s sometimes nice to go out for a Sunday dinner. I’ve been on a bit of a mission to find some the top restaurants in Teesside for a roast, and Finkle & Green is definitely up there for a Stockton-on-Tees spot!

About Finkle & Green

Before we start talking about the dinner, let me give you all the deets you need. Finkle & Green is a contemporary bar and restaurant overlooking the river Tees in Stockton. It’s got everything you could want, from an outdoor terrace to space for live music nights to banging menus. It’s actually been a part of the local scene for a few years, but sadly closed its doors in 2019, less than 12 months after it was refurbished. However, it’s had a huge refresh and is finally open again!

Getting to Finkle & Green

You might have spotted Finkle & Green if you’ve driven along the river by the Castlegate car park in Stockton, just perched at the top of the hill. And it’s super easy to get up there! For your sat nav or Maps, it’s 11 Finkle Street, Stockton-on-Tees, TS18 1TB – that’ll get you right outside.

There’s a little car park just outside of the restaurant (don’t be afraid to drive over the paved area – you’ll see when you get there), which is free on a weekend. But if you decide you want to visit on another day, you can use Bishop Street car park, which is free for 2 hours and about a minute away from the door. It’s super convenient!

A creamy gnocchi starter as part of the Finkle & Green Sunday dinner

Starter

We were so grateful to be invited down to try out the Sunday dinner menu, kicking things off with a beautifully creamy gnocchi dish. I flipping love gnocchi and it’s a bit of a staple in our house, but I haven’t had it in a sauce quite like this before. It was almost more of a glaze and it was so delicious. It paired up so well with the spring onion too!

There were also some small pieces of something in the sauce, and we couldn’t quite work out what it was at first. Before trying, I was convinced it was mushroom and I had the fear, but after trying, I could tell it was 100% fish of some sort. Our lovely waiter informed us that it was actually cod! It was so so good and I totally loved the combo. I need more fish and gnocchi dishes in my life ASAP.

Mains

Now while the starter was amazing, it was the roast that we were truly there for. And when I tell you it was phenomenal, I really mean it! Matthew and I usually pick a different meat each because we like to try a good spread, but we saw someone else have beef and we both fell in love. It was so pink and juicy-looking that we absolutely had to try it for ourselves! And we didn’t even regret getting the same as each other because the beef was like butter. It was so tender, flavoursome and downright incredible.

Alongside our beef, we had a whole host of sides. I’m talking mash, root mash, roasties, carrot, parsnip, Yorkshire pudding, red cabbage, broccoli, green beans and gravy. It was a whole feast! And the thing is, it’s so hard to pick out the best bits because it was all beautiful. The mash was absolutely spot on texture and taste-wise, the roasties had the most gorgeous seasoning, the gravy was the right thickness – heck, even the broccoli was good! Every single element was out of this world and we couldn’t get enough.

After all this sensational food, the pair of us were absolutely stuffed, but everyone has a little bit of room for pudding, right?

Dessert

For our dessert, we opted for the tried and true classic, the humble sticky toffee pudding. You can’t go wrong with a sticky toffee and it’s a staple for a Sunday dinner pud (along with apple crumble). And this one was just next level. It wasn’t too stodgy or heavy, which is always a risk with a sticky toffee. It was light and rich with a bitter sweetness from the toffee.

And not only was the cakey part amazing, but it was also topped off with some of the best toffee sauce I’ve ever had. I could’ve happily walked away with a jar of the stuff and had it on absolutely everything. The extra popcorn was a fabulous touch too and added a lovely texture. Every mouthful was heaven!

So take this as your sign to book a Finkle & Green Sunday dinner – you absolutely won’t regret it. The setting itself is super fresh with a modern look and a fabulous soundtrack, the staff are so friendly and helpful, and the food is off the scale good. We had such a lush time and we can’t wait to go back, either for a live music night or a parmo!
